Freedom camping in New Zealand is strictly regulated under the Freedom Camping Act. Understanding local bylaws and environmental ethics guarantees that our wilderness remains pristine for wildlife and future travelers.

1. Certified Self-Contained Vehicles Only

If camping outside established holiday parks or DOC campsites, your campervan must possess a green 'Self-Contained' warrant sticker. This certifies built-in toilet, water storage, and waste tanks. Never dump greywater into rivers or lakes.

2. Fire Bans & Wildlife Protection

Open campfires are prohibited in almost all conservation areas due to extreme wildfire risks. Use portable gas stoves instead. Protect native bird life like the curious alpine Kea by keeping all food sealed in hard containers—never feed wild birds human food.
